More than fifteen years have passed since Virat Kohli made his Indian debut in an ODI against Sri Lanka. Two years after getting his first taste of international cricket, he was given more frequent opportunities and hasn’t looked back. As he wraps up his 16-year career in international cricket, we examine the evolution of his century ticker, mapping each of his 80 career hundreds.

2008–2010
During his maiden year in international cricket, Kohli scored 0 hundreds in all forms. He participated in five games and achieved a career-high 54 points. However, the century didn’t arrive until 2009. Kohli concluded 2009 with his first century in international cricket, a 107 against Sri Lanka in Kolkata, following two half-centuries in the year. In 2010, he added three more tons, one in an ODI against Bangladesh in January and two more in late January against Australia and New Zealand, both in ODIs.
2011–2013
During the World Cup year, Kohli scored his first century outside of the subcontinent in Cardiff against England after making a century* against Bangladesh in Dhaka. He concluded with a 117 against the West Indies in Vizag after scoring another century against the same opponents at home in Delhi. In 2011, four tons were recorded in ODIs.
Maybe 2012 was the year that made Kohli into the monster he is now. In Adelaide against Australia, he scored his first Test century, one of his eight hundreds for the year. Throughout the year, he amassed two more Test tons, one each against England and New Zealand at home. His best-ever ODI score was a massive 183 against Pakistan in Dhaka. In the same year, he also scored three tons in ODIs against Sri Lanka.
2013 saw six century recorded, including tons in Test matches against South Africa in Johannesburg and ODI tons in Zimbabwe and the West Indies. In Chennai, he also scored a century in a Test match against Australia.
2014–2016
Between 2014 and 2016, Kohli amassed 19 hundreds, solidifying his position as the world’s best batsman in all forms. At Napier, he scored an ODI century against New Zealand to start 2014. He then struck a Test ton in Wellington, but his outstanding Test series in Australia, when he scored three hundreds (115 in Adelaide, 141 in Melbourne, and 169 at Adelaide) was the high point of the year.
In 2015, he made a fourth ton in the Australian series in Sydney, carrying on the streak. After that, a World Cup century against Pakistan. He finished a fantastic 2015 with a century in an ODI played at home against the Proteas and a century in a Test match played at Galle against Sri Lanka.
In 2016, he amassed seven centuries in all forms, including his first-ever double century against the West Indies. The year saw two additional double tons, one each against England and New Zealand.
2017–2018
Virat Kohli had an amazing 22 international hundreds, including 10 in Test cricket alone, during his breakthrough years in the game in 2017 and 2018. In 2017, there were additional records for two double hundreds at home against Sri Lanka and a double ton against Bangladesh. Sri Lanka was his main objective in 2017, while he also scored a ton of runs in ODIs against England and the West Indies. In only 2017 versus Sri Lanka, two ODI tons, two Test hundreds, and two Test double hundreds were scored.
In 2018, after a heroic century in the Test match at Centurion, he scored three hundreds in the One-Day Internationals in a six-match series in South Africa. Before scoring three hundreds in ODIs at home against the Windies, two Test tons were also achieved in England. He recorded a Test ton at Perth, Australia.
2019
Before scoring two more runs at home against the same opponents, Kohli began the year with an ODI hundred that proved to be the game-winning score against the Australians in Adelaide.
Kohli scored five consecutive half-centuries at the ICC Cricket World Cup, but he was unable to make any of those runs reach the hundred mark. But on the West Indies tour, he returned to form with consecutive centuries in the ODI series.
With a century in the pink-ball Test match against Bangladesh and a double-ton against South Africa, the captain concluded the year on a high note.
2021
Kohli failed to achieve a century for India in 2021 as cricket gradually returned to normal in 2021, with teams playing and traveling in biosecure bubbles because of Covid-19.
2022
In an Asia Cup T20I match against Afghanistan at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Virat Kohli hit an undefeated 122 runs off 61 balls, ending his 10-20-day streak without making a century in international cricket. India won a Super 4 stage match by 101 runs because to his brilliant century. In December, he got his second century of the year against Bangladesh.
2023
Virat Kohli scored his 45th ODI century to begin the new year, making it his 73rd century in all competitions. Against Sri Lanka, Kohli blasted 113 runs off of 87 balls at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati.
In the third game of the Sri Lanka ODI series at the Greenfield International Stadium, he backed it up with another century. Sachin Tendulkar’s record of most ODI hundreds was just three centuries away from him after the hit.
In the fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in March, Kohli scored 186 against Australia, ending a lengthy wait for a Test century. In the second game in a two-match series against the Windies in July, he backed it up with another century in a Test match against the West Indies. Before being expelled, he scored 121.
The batsman, who was born in Delhi, subsequently crushed his 77th century against Pakistan in an Asia Cup 2023 Super Four match at the R.Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. With nine fours and three sixes in just 94 balls, he amassed an undefeated 122.
A month later, in the 2023 ODI World Cup, Kohli was back at it, smashing his 78th century against Bangladesh. With the aid of his 103 from 97 balls, India won easily by seven wickets.
In match 37 of the 2023 World Cup at Eden Gardens, he scored his second century of the competition and his 79th in international cricket against South Africa. He scored an undefeated 101 to aid India in establishing a 327 mark for the Proteas to pursue. India won the match by a score of 243 runs, with South Africa scoring a meager 83 in reply.
In the meanwhile, during the first semi-final of the 50-over showcase game against New Zealand, Kohli achieved his third ODI century of the 2023 World Cup and his 80th career century. His century enabled India to set a 398-run goal for New Zealand to pursue.
